Community Access: Building Confidence Through Participation

Support Coordination
September 27, 2025

Introduction

Community access is a key part of the NDIS, supporting participants to engage with their community, build social connections, and develop confidence in everyday life. For many people, meaningful participation goes beyond simply leaving the house — it’s about feeling included, supported, and empowered to take part in activities that matter to them.

At Northern Star Support Services, we support participants to access their community in ways that align with their interests, abilities, and personal goals.

Why Community Access Matters

Social connection and community involvement play an important role in overall wellbeing. Participating in community activities can help reduce isolation, build independence, and improve mental and emotional health.

For some participants, barriers such as confidence, accessibility, transport, or previous negative experiences can make community engagement feel overwhelming. With the right support in place, these barriers can be reduced, allowing participants to engage safely and comfortably.

Community access supports are designed to help participants build skills, confidence, and routines that support long-term independence.

What Community Access Can Look Like

Community access under the NDIS is flexible and tailored to each individual. Supports may include assistance with:

Social and Recreational Activities:

Attending social groups, hobbies, sports, or recreational programs that align with personal interests.

Everyday Community Engagement:

Support to visit local shops, attend appointments, use public spaces, or participate in community events.

Skill Development in Real-Life Settings:

Building confidence with communication, social interaction, time management, and independent decision-making.

Transport and Accompaniment:

Support to safely access transport options and travel to and from community activities.

How Support Workers Assist with Community Access

Support workers play an important role in providing encouragement, guidance, and practical assistance during community activities. This support is always delivered at the participant’s pace and level of comfort.

At Northern Star Support Services, our approach focuses on respectful support that promotes choice, dignity, and gradual skill-building. We aim to empower participants rather than create dependence, supporting them to grow their confidence over time.

Creating Meaningful and Sustainable Participation

Community access is most effective when it reflects the participant’s goals and interests. Whether someone wants to reconnect socially, try new activities, or maintain independence in everyday tasks, supports should be meaningful and sustainable.

Through person-centred planning and ongoing communication, Northern Star Support Services helps participants engage with their community in ways that support long-term wellbeing, confidence, and independence.
